Short answer: Gravel driveway repair starts with finding out why the surface failed. Shallow roughness may need grading; recurring potholes, deep ruts and washouts need a closer look at drainage and the underlying material. Ask for a repair plan before paying for another load of gravel.
If the same hole returns after every rain, the useful question is not simply “How much stone do I need?” It is “What will this repair change?” A contractor’s quote should explain the damaged area, the proposed work and the condition you can expect when the job is finished.
What kind of gravel driveway repair do you need?
Use these observations to describe the job. They are starting points for a site assessment, rather than a diagnosis from a photograph.
- A few shallow holes on an otherwise firm driveway: ask whether localized repair and reshaping will be sufficient.
- Holes that repeatedly hold water: ask the contractor to assess surface drainage as part of the repair.
- Deep wheel tracks or soft sections: ask whether the work extends below the surface gravel.
- Channels cut by runoff: request an explanation of where the water enters, travels and leaves the driveway.
- Loose material and general roughness without soft spots: ask whether maintenance grading can reuse the existing aggregate.
Photograph the whole driveway as well as individual defects. A close-up of a pothole does not show a blocked crossing, a steep approach or runoff arriving from the hillside.
Why do gravel driveway potholes keep coming back?
Water and the shape of the road deserve attention before another surface patch. The Federal Highway Administration’s unpaved-road guidance explains that drainage depends both on getting water off the road and carrying it away from the road’s edge. Ponding can soften the material and contribute to potholes.
For a recurring hole, ask: “Will you investigate the cause, or does this quote cover filling the depression only?” If the contractor recommends drainage work, have it described separately. That makes it easier to distinguish a short-term surface repair from a more substantial correction.
Will grading fix it, or do you need new gravel?
Have the contractor assess how much suitable material remains and what needs correcting before deciding on a delivery. Ask which sections can be reworked, which need additional aggregate and why.
The estimate should identify the material being supplied, the quantity or basis for calculating it, delivery and placement. “One load” is hard to compare unless the load size is specified.

What should a drainage or washout assessment cover?
Walk the affected area with the contractor and point out where you have seen water collect or flow. FHWA’s drainage maintenance guidance connects effective drainage with preventing erosion and saturation of the road’s supporting layers. It is road-maintenance guidance, not a site-specific design for your driveway.
Ask for answers to four practical questions:
- Where is runoff entering the damaged section?
- Are an existing ditch, crossing or outlet involved?
- What is included in restoring the surface and any affected drainage features?
- Where will the water go after the proposed work?
Do not accept “we will push the water to the side” as a complete description. Ask the contractor to identify the intended outlet and any further assessment or approval needed before changing it.
What affects gravel driveway repair cost?
A driveway’s length alone is not enough to produce a useful repair price. A long stretch of surface maintenance and a short failed section can involve very different work. Compare written estimates for the same scope.
- Mobilization: hauling equipment to and from the site, including any minimum charge.
- Surface work: the exact areas to grade or repair and how the finished surface will be compacted.
- Materials: aggregate type, quantity, delivery, placement and any allowance for additional material.
- Deeper work: excavation, unsuitable-material removal or rebuilding, if the assessment calls for it.
- Drainage: separately described ditch, outlet or culvert work, where applicable.
- Site constraints: access for trucks, steep sections, traffic management and disposal.
Before accepting an hourly quote, ask for an estimated time, any minimum and the process for approving extra work. Before accepting a fixed price, ask what assumptions could change it.
What to send a gravel driveway repair contractor
A useful first message is:
I need repair of an existing gravel driveway in [city, state or ZIP]. It is approximately [length] by [width]. The main problems are [potholes, ruts, washouts or soft areas], especially after [conditions]. I have photos of the full driveway and damaged sections. Please confirm whether your estimate includes assessing drainage, grading, materials, delivery and compaction, and whether a site visit is needed.
Also mention gates, narrow turns, heavy vehicles using the road and any previous repairs. Ask who will inspect the site and who will perform the work.
Before work starts, agree how unexpected damage will be handled. If the first pass exposes a larger problem, you should know whether the operator will pause for approval or continue at a previously agreed rate.
Who should you hire for gravel driveway repair?
Match the provider to the proposed scope. Ask a tractor grading operator about surface repairs and gravel spreading. If the assessment points to excavation, drainage reconstruction or substantial base work, confirm that the provider actually handles those tasks.
Start with our local tractor work directory and check each business’s published services and current coverage. For properties around Austin, our Texas guide has a section on driveway work and local provider listings. Those listings do not guarantee availability or a particular repair outcome.
Describe your driveway repair project. Include your location and the problems you want assessed so the scope is clear from the start.
Gravel driveway repair questions
Can I just fill the potholes with gravel?
A surface patch may be temporary if the cause remains. For holes that return, ask for an assessment that includes drainage and the condition beneath the visible surface.
Should I repair only the damaged section or regrade the whole driveway?
Request both options when they are practical. Ask what each includes, whether an isolated repair will fit the surrounding surface and which unresolved problems would remain.
Can a tractor operator handle a washout?
Confirm the scope rather than judging by the machine. Ask whether the operator offers only grading or can assess the failed area and arrange the drainage or excavation work it requires.
Is routine maintenance the same as repair?
No. Ask for maintenance to be identified separately from correcting existing damage. Keep the initial repair description and photos so you can compare the completed work with the agreed scope.
