The Family Connection
To give you some context, Peanut and I go way back. His family has been like a second home to me. Peanut’s father, Darryl, and his brother, Rick, are integral parts of our tight-knit community.
Darryl, in particular, has a wealth of experience with machinery, having worked at our county field for decades. This connection isn’t just about land; it’s about a shared history and friendship.
The Flood’s Aftermath: On a fateful Saturday two weeks ago, Catawba County experienced an unprecedented flood. In just a few hours, we had thirteen inches of rain. The water levels rose dramatically, surpassing any previous records. Even the oldest residents couldn’t recall a flood of this magnitude. The destruction was everywhere – trees uprooted, pastures buried under debris, and long-standing landmarks altered beyond recognition.
A Devastated Landscape: One of the most striking casualties was a field near the creek that Peanut and I often visited. This field, once a lush pasture, was now covered in sand, rocks, and roots.
The force of the water had unearthed roots that had been buried for years, bringing them to the surface. Darryl’s pasture was hit hard, with significant portions of land simply washed away.
The Restoration Effort: To tackle this colossal mess, we decided to use an extreme duty landscape rake. This tool, equipped with high-quality Italian tines, was designed to handle tough conditions.
We had a mix of sand and red clay to deal with, along with roots and rocks. Our goal was to see just how much abuse the rake could take and how effective it would be in such a challenging environment.

Tackling the Terrain: With Peanut at the wheel, we began the arduous task of cleaning up the field. The landscape rake sifted through the sand, pulling out roots and debris while allowing the finer material to pass through. This process, though slow, was effective. We were able to create rows of debris, which we later planned to push back into the creek bed.

Unlike cheaper alternatives, these tines were designed to flex and absorb the stress without breaking. This flexibility allowed us to tackle larger roots and rocks without damaging the equipment.
