Fresh Del Monte Expands Regenerative Agriculture by 11% Across Farms

Fresh Del Monte, a global produce giant, has made significant strides in expanding regenerative agriculture practices across its farms, surpassing several sustainability goals ahead of its 2030 target.

Increased Regenerative Practices

Between 2022 and 2023, Fresh Del Monte increased regenerative agriculture practices by 10.9%, as revealed in its latest sustainability report.

The company is working towards implementing these practices across all its owned and associated growers’ farms by 2030. This includes adopting cover crops, eliminating herbicides, developing pest-resistant plant varieties, and minimizing fertilizer use.

The company is also involved in a joint initiative to turn food waste from its pineapple farms into sustainable fertilizers, further advancing its commitment to sustainable farming.

Achieving Sustainability Goals Early

In addition to the progress in regenerative agriculture, Fresh Del Monte has achieved its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas reduction goals ahead of schedule.

Originally set for 2030, the company has already reached a 28% reduction, surpassing its goal of 27.5%. Fresh Del Monte is also close to meeting its Scope 3 targets, which aim for a 12.3% reduction in emissions by 2030.

CEO Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh emphasized the importance of sustainability in his letter to stakeholders, highlighting that the agriculture industry must take thoughtful steps to protect the planet for future generations.

New Targets for Human Rights

Fresh Del Monte also introduced new goals focused on improving human rights in agriculture. The company plans to conduct human rights assessments on all major agricultural operations it owns by the end of the decade.

This aligns with its broader mission to lead by example and ensure that sustainability extends beyond environmental practices to include ethical considerations.

Preserving Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in Fresh Del Monte’s sustainability efforts. The company has implemented ecosystem mapping in regions such as Guatemala and Costa Rica, with plans to expand this practice to other farms. Monitoring data and adjusting planting practices help preserve ecosystems and maintain the health of the land.

Currently, 40% of company-owned farms and 29% of associated grower farms have adopted regenerative and soil health management practices, demonstrating Fresh Del Monte’s comitment to fostering sustainable farming.
